COVID-19 and Menstrual Health

Introduction

Due to COVID-19 pandemic, lockdown was started all over the country. It caused difficulty to access menstrual hygiene products among girls and women from different part of the country. Through this project, Visible Impact aimed to provide menstrual hygiene products to girls and women who are in need of those products to maintain menstrual hygiene.

Activities conducted under the project

 

Communication and PPE support to youth volunteers

Visible impact provided communication support and personal protective equipments to the young volunteers who have been continuously engaged to provide different relief services for the people affected by COVID-19 in different provinces of Nepal.

Reusable sanitary pad and menstrual cup support

Visible Impact provided 100 pieces of menstrual cups to frontline health workers working in COVID ward, isolation ward, emergencies of Sahid Gangalal National Heart Centre, Bansbari and 40 pieces of menstrual cups for 40 young girls staying in SAATHI women shelter.

Visible Impact distributed eco-friendly reusable sanitary pads to women and girls in need:

  • 400 reusable sanitary pads to women and girls working in 7 carpet factories around Jorpati area, Kathmandu
  • 600 eco-friendly reusable sanitary pads in a urban slum (Santinagar) of Kathmandu
  • 400 pieces to quarantine centres in Karnali province, Nepal
  • 180 pieces to people with disability (Visually impaired and physically disabled)
  • 144 pieces to transgender people

 

Our impact

Through this project, girls, women and sexual and gender minorities were able to manage their menstruation in a hygienic way in the period of lockdown. Frontline health workers were able to manage their menstruation safely and work for longer time with their protective suit on. Also, through PPE support, young volunteers were able to work in field and provide relief services to the people affected by the pandemic in a safe way.
