Introduction

Psychosocial Support program, implemented from March 2018-2019, was an extension of Girls Better after Quake aimed at providing social support and safety net to the girls of Kharanitar village of Nuwakot district. The reconstruction and recovery following the Earthquake of 2015 had the dreams and aspirations of the girls placed second. Therefore, the program focused on equipping the girls with the tools to cope with the situations following an earthquake and also on providing financial assistance to engage in academic and creative activities.

Capacity building

As part of the Psychosocial Support Program a one-day interactive workshop was organized by Visible Impact in Shankanath Primary School, Kharanitar, Nuwakot. The workshop focused on identification of mental health problems, the importance of understanding them, identifying if their kith and kin are looking for psychosocial support, and who to approach in case of support required.

Use of seed grant

Seed grants were provided to ten girls during the project duration in four allotments. Throughout the year, they utilized the money to enroll themselves in different academic and creative activities. Two of the girls paid their admission fees to pursue their dreams of becoming civil engineers. They also utilized the money to get the extra help they required in their studies by taking tuition classes of Science, English and Mathematics. In addition to this, they bought story books, quiz books, encyclopedias which helped them learn more about the world. Two of the girls also took scooter driving lessons which they defined as their first step towards independence

Our impact

Through the project, young girls had been encouraged to pursue their dreams and explore their potential. Girls had received support to complete school education, get the extra help they needed in terms of tuition, explore science experimentations through participation in science labs, develop basic computer skills and also enroll themselves in higher education.
